You can now purchase the DVD at Arte Boutique. See comments for extra films included in this release. Arte summarizes Marker’s monumental film in this succinct soundbyte:
De Che Guevara à Rudi Dutschke, de Lénine à Mao, de Charonne à la rue Gay-Lussac, de Cuba à Santiago, Chris Marker retrace la montée puis la retombée des utopies révolutionnaires des années 60 et 70.
There is some more information and discussion on a wide variety of DVD-release topics in the Criterion forums. It is interesting how many of the members have CM avatars (a Guillaume among them). Hopefully some will contribute some musings to this blog before too long. Don’t be shy… Perhaps M. Marker himself posts or lurks there; given the cinephilia in evidence, palpable and breathable, we wouldn’t be surprised. All are disguised, all are welcome. Everything is hidden in plain sight.

Greetings. Do we know if the Arte Boutique disc that is discussed here features an english language soundtrack and the use of english language subtitles? Thanks,
j.
The history of the film is complex; it was re-edited in an expanded English version later. I assume that this release is the original French version and does not contain English soundtrack or subtitles; however, I could well be wrong. I did order a copy so I will post what I find when it arrives…
By the way, the English-dubbed version is screening at Lincoln Center Film Societ in New York on May 13.
@John: Thanks for the news. Are you going to go? Will you send your impressions?
What an appropriate year for this film to return to the public space: as ‘08 looks back on ‘68, we find ourselves caught in a markerian kind of time loop of self-reflection. Well-needed, certainly.
Yes, got tickets, and will be happy to write something up afterward. I’ve watched it a couple of times on a small monitor in the NYU library but look forward to seeing it in a theater, since it is so epic.
Really appreciate your site by the way. We’re actually in post-production on a Marker-influenced essay-film about vanishing aspects of New York, so it’s nice to see some other CM devotees out there.
Your film idea reminds me of a wonderful short film I saw years ago on Manhattan - I believe a super 8 by Jem Cohen whose title i can’t place at the moment - at the Arsenal theater “way back in West Berlin” (as iggy pop sings).
Le Fond de l’Air est Rouge is playing on Wednesday (14/5/08) at the Cine Lumiere in London.
BTW - any updates on whether the French DVD has English subs? I might still buy it even if it doesn’t.
there are no english subtitles on the french dvd.
